This project will be the culmination of all the work that you have done on leadership over the last semester. You will be responsible for producing a paper and a 10 minute presentation. Presentations will take place in the last two classes of the semester. Your paper is due the day you present. In your paper, you will choose one international leader (i.e. someone who has held the highest office in the country you are interested in), and analyze a variety of aspects of their leadership. The paper should include the following sections: 1) A brief biography - outlining their family life, educations, early life events, or anything that frames their early political development. 2) Pathway to Power - as with the paper you wrote, you should cover:
3) Analysis of Leadership Style - using interviews and speeches (both transcripts of or video of source), analyze the leadership characteristics and predict a leadership style. 4) Crisis: Identify and explain a crisis they faced and how they managed/dealt with that crisis. Each section of the paper should be one page, but not more than 1.5 pages, single spaced (again, we will be using the brief/memorandum style we've used all semester), which means the paper should be between 4-6 pages. As with the others, fully cited, 12pt. font, and you can use the four headers to organize your paper. For the presentation, you should follow the format of the paper. Your presentation should be between 10-12 minutes. An illustrative powerpoint should accompany your oral presentation. You can bring food to the presentations. Writing Assignment #3
Pathways to Power: Women in Political Leadership Using both the Jalalzai and Atlantic article on women political leadership, write a brief of one female global leader (not from the US). The leader should hold one of the highest offices in a particular country. In a 3-4 page brief, cover the following areas in analyzing your leader's pathway to power:

Written Assignment #2
For this assignment, you will write a briefing report that analyzes presidential decision-making during a crisis. This three page report will include the following: 1 - identify the crisis - explain what happened and some historical context to the event 2 - explain the action/decision the President made in response to this crisis. Did he have multiple options to choose from? Why did he end up choosing the specific decision? What influenced his decision? 3 - evaluate the President's crisis decision making using the handout by Rowe on crisis leadership. What areas did the President do well in? What were the limitations of his decision making process that resulted in the decision they settled on? What was the legacy of the decision? Was it ultimately a good decision or not? Also, in order to help you with the analysis, refer to the article posted opposite on Presidential Leadership and Crisis Management. Be sure to have a bibliography of all the sources you used in the brief in a bibliography. Homework for October 26
Please continue to research your Presidential crisis that you're going to analyze for your paper. This paper will be due November 3. In class I will hand out the paper overview, including the sections of analysis you should be covering in the paper. Homework for October 20

Please submit two questions to the Leadership survey on the Google Doc set up by Liam. This is the second survey we're going to conduct during advisory, but unlike the election survey, the focus of these questions should be on leadership in general based on the readings from the first part of the class.. Homework for October 7

Please watch the Presidential Debate on NBC/CNN on September 26 at 9pm. While watching the debate, consider the assigned perspective you were given (either focusing on the substance and words of the candidates or the body language) so we can discuss it on Wednesday. Written Assignment #1
We have spent the last couple of weeks looking specifically at characteristics, styles and constraints of leadership, while considering what combination of these factors leads to "good" or "effective" leadership. Using the readings from the last few weeks, write a 3-4 page paper that summarizes your thoughts and reflections on leadership since these discussions. In your answer consider the following: 1) Which characteristics do you believe to be nonnegotiable in good leadership - limit yourself to discussing no more than three. 2) Which leadership style do you believe to be the most effective for what characteristics you look for in a leader and why? 3) Choose a modern political system (e.g. American, British, Canadian, Chinese). How well do you think the leadership style you chose will work in this system? What are the strengths of this style in this system? What limitations or weaknesses does this style have considering the constraints inherent in the system. When writing the paper, refer directly to the assigned readings and cite where appropriate. You should not need to do any extended research for this paper - try to only use the readings that you have already read and your own ideas - but if you do use outside sources, please cite those also. The paper will be due on September 26 in class. Homework for September 20
